NSW:Godless ethics led to Nazism: Nile

Conservative New South Wales crossbench MP FRED NILE has introduced his private member's
bill to abolish school ethics classes, arguing the course is based on a philosophy linked
to Nazism and Communism.

The Christian Democratic Party MP has told the upper house his bill will abolish ethics
in public schools at the end of this school year, saying that with just 27-hundred students
enrolled in the course, the program's a failure.

The former Labor government introduced the ethics classes as an alternative to traditional
scripture lessons.

Mr NILE has provoked anger among Greens and Labor MPs, by saying the dangerous secular
humanist philosophy taught in the ethics course led to the worst atrocities committed
during World War II.

Debate on the ethics bill is adjourned to September 16.

NSW:Woman's body found on NSW Central Coast

SYDNEY, April 10 AAP - Police are searching for a 30-year-old man in connection with
the suspicious death of a woman on the NSW Central Coast.

The search follows the discovery on Saturday night of the body of a 37-year-old woman
in the bedroom of an apartment at Gosford Avenue, The Entrance.

Police from the Tuggerah Lakes Local Area Command were called to the apartment following
concerns for the welfare of the occupants.

"When the officers were unable to contact the residents, they entered the unit through
an unlocked window," police said in a statement.

"Investigators established a crime scene and began investigations into the woman's
death and are following a number of lines of inquiry."

Officers have spoken to a 20-year-old woman who was asleep inside the apartment, police said.

Inquiries into the incident are continuing.

SA:Marathon to get new exploration licence

By Tim Dornin

ADELAIDE, Dec 20 AAP - Marathon Resources will get a new licence to explore for uranium
in South Australia's Flinders Ranges if it agrees to tougher conditions.

The SA government said it would consult with the company over the move and would consider
a range of options which might exclude or limit mining in environmentally sensitive areas,
including Arkaroola.

"The government is currently looking closely at all options for the future management
of the Arkaroola region to preserve its iconic landscapes, biodiversity, cultural, wilderness,
scientific and tourism values," acting Mineral Resources Minister Jack Snelling said.

Marathon had asked for a two-year licence but said it would immediately commence consultation
with the government in relation to the one-year renewal.

Its operations in the Flinders were suspended after it was found to have improperly
disposed of waste in the area in 2008.

Welcoming the tighter restrictions on the company, the Australian Democrats criticised
the timing of the announcement, coming so close to Christmas and after months of delay.

"We are pleased with the comments of the acting minister which give some hope that
ultimately Marathon Resources will not be given a licence to mine," spokeswoman Jeanie
Walker said.

While the Australian Greens also called for a ban on drilling or other ground disturbing
activities to remain in place.

Greens MP Mark Parnell said with the government announcing stricter conditions on Marathon
they must match their rhetoric with action.

"Anything less than a complete ban on drilling into the future will mean weaker, not
stricter, operating conditions," he said.

The South Australian Opposition said the government must reveal its position on mining
in the environmentally sensitive Arkaroola region.

"South Australian deserve to have a clear position on mining from their government
but instead all we have had so far is delay tactics and rhetoric," opposition leader Isobel
Redmond said.

She said while the Liberals were supportive of mining, Arkaroola deserved the highest
environmental protection.

NSW:Coalition internet bad for regions: Whan

SYDNEY, Aug 12 AAP - The federal opposition's plan to replace the national broadband
network with a $6.3 billion private-sector model will deny regional communities high speed
broadband, NSW Rural Affairs Minister Steven Whan says.

The federal coalition announced on Tuesday it would provide 97 per cent of households
with faster broadband through a patchwork of technologies.

It said its plan would guarantee minimum broadband speeds of 12 Megabits per second
(Mbps) for 97 per cent of households.

Labor's $43 billion national broadband network (NBN) relies on fast fibre optic technology
for all but the most remote locations.

Communications Minister Stephen Conroy said on Thursday the NBN would have the capacity
to deliver speeds of one gigabit (1000Mbps) per second.

Mr Whan lashed out at the coalition plan on Thursday, saying 1000 country towns across
Australia would be denied fibre optic infrastructure, and therefore the fastest internet
connections.

"Regional centres deserve fibre optic laid out so that they can compete in business
and deliver 21st century education and health opportunities," he said in a statement.

"This policy disadvantages people in rural and regional areas, who deserve long term,
high speed broadband infrastructure."

Vic: Emirates jet close to major 'aviation disaster' - report

MELBOURNE, April 12 AAP - An Emirates plane came just centimetres from crashing at
Melbourne Airport, authorities have revealed.

The fully-laden jet carrying 225 passengers and bound for Dubai last month had to use
the entire 3,600-metre-long runway 16 but failed to become airborne until the last moment,
News Limited newspapers say.

The pilots managed to pull the nose up sharply but smashed the jet's tail into the
ground and also took out airport strobe lights 170 metres from the end of the runway.

The plane then took out navigation antennae before barely clearing the airport's boundary
fence half a kilometre away.

"It was as close as we have ever come to a major aviation catastrophe in Australia,"

an aviation official told News Limited.

Fed: Labor plans concessions for high earners

SYDNEY, Aug 23 AAP - Labor is planning to give work contract concessions to employees
earning more than $100,000.

The move could defuse business anger over the opposition's plans to scrap the federal
government's Australian Workplace agreements, Fairfax reports.

Higher earners would be able to sign individual common law contracts that are exempt
from awards, under the proposal being considered by the federal opposition.

The ALP will argue the change makes them almost as flexible as AWAs.

West Australian MPs and Labor candidates have been pushing frontbenchers to offer sweeteners
to the mining sector after warning the party's policy to remove AWAs could harm Labor's
chances of winning key WA seats.

Fed: States likely to allow surrogacy: Ruddock

AAP General News (Australia)
04-08-2007
Fed: States likely to allow surrogacy: Ruddock

CANBERRA, April 8 AAP - The states are likely to allow the use of surrogate mothers
as a result of moves to adopt uniform national legislation, Attorney-General Philip Ruddock
says.

Mr Ruddock is pushing for the states to harmonise surrogacy laws, but said he had not
tried to tell the states what their arrangements should be.

Asked whether it was possible that the states would chose uniform laws that prevented
Australians using surrogacy, Mr Ruddock said: "I suspect that won't be the outcome."

"I'll leave it to the states to speak as to what form it should take," he said.

"But I have seen some of the reporting of it and it suggests that the more likely harmonised
approach is one in which there will be sensible legislation to allow surrogacy in appropriate
circumstances."

Mr Ruddock today said Labor Senator Stephen Conroy's trip interstate in order to have
a baby using a surrogate mother "makes the law an ass".

Senator Conroy and his wife, Paula Benson, conceived using an egg donated by a friend
and fertilised by his sperm, which was implanted in another friend, who carried the baby
to term.

The couple went to Sydney for the procedure because of obstacles under Victorian laws,
including a requirement that the surrogate be infertile (infertile).

Only NSW and the ACT permit surrogacy.

Mr Ruddock said the laws should be the same in each state to eliminate couples "forum
shopping" for laws that suit their needs.

A discussion paper on the issue will be presented at a meeting of the Standing Committee
of Attorneys-General this week.

The states and territories agreed to work towards harmonising the laws at the last
meeting in November.

Mr Ruddock said national sperm and embryo donor registers would also be on the agenda
for the meeting.

It is important to ensure donor registers are accurate so children born using sperm
donations can trace their genetic heritage, Mr Ruddock said.

"I think it's important.... so that they are able to enter into relationships and not
face the difficulty they might be marrying or entering in some other form of relationship
with a step-brother or step-sister," he said.

Starguide Digital Networks Granted Satellite Ethernet Delivery Technology Patent.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 4, 2001

Removable Card Offers Flexibility, Eliminates the Need

for Separate Router to Distribute IP Content

in Satellite Distribution Systems

StarGuide Digital Networks, Inc., a leading provider of satellite transmission systems, today announced that it has been issued U.S. Patent No. 6,160,797, entitled "Satellite Receiver/Router, System, and Method of Use." This new patent covers removable Ethernet cards utilized in satellite receivers as well as satellite receiver cards that provide Internet Protocol (IP) router functionality, often eliminating the need and expense of a separate router in IP-over-satellite distribution systems. The technology is an important addition to the proprietary StarGuide(R) III satellite transmission system, StarGuide's CoolCast(R) streaming media aggregator and broadcaster, and StarGuide's Transportal 2000(TM) professional and corporate multimedia distribution system.

StarGuide's CoolCast subsidiary utilizes this IP-over-satellite technology to facilitate the multicast distribution of streaming video and audio to unlimited numbers of broadband PC users. Use of the removable card within a satellite receiver, such as the StarGuide III, provides an integrated receiver and router at the edge of the Internet, with the ability to distribute CoolCast's content into a computer network. With this patent, CoolCast's technology has secured a total of four patents, highlighting its innovation and leadership in the fields of satellite distribution and streaming media.

In May, 2000, ZoomTown.com, the broadband Internet subsidiary of Broadwing Inc. (NYSE:BRW), began using the CoolCast(R) Internet edge multicasting system and delivering the CoolCast(R) service to its ADSL subscribers in the Greater Cincinnati area, the nation's most highly concentrated base of broadband users.

StarGuide also uses this technology in its patented Transportal 2000(TM) system to distribute content for professional digital audio and video broadcasters by satellite, terrestrially, and through the Internet. StarGuide's Transportal 2000(TM) system is currently being deployed by Clear Channel Communications (NYSE:CCU), Premiere Radio, and ABC Radio in conjunction with a conversion of their nationwide satellite transmission networks from old "Sedats" technology, also owned by StarGuide, to StarGuide's new state-of-the art and patented StarGuide(R) III satellite transmission system. The StarGuide(R) III transmission system is currently being deployed by Jones Broadcast Programming as it converts its prior StarGuide(R) II system and its prior Wegener system to the StarGuide(R) III system.

"This Ethernet distribution technology is one of many important innovations StarGuide has brought to satellite transmission, Internet content distribution, and related areas of technology," said Jeff Dankworth, President of StarGuide. "We believe that this new patent, the thirteenth awarded to our relatively young company, further establishes our pioneer status in the field of satellite based digital content distribution."

Other significant patents recently procured by StarGuide include: U.S. Patent No. 6,094,671 entitled "Aggregate Information Production and Display System" issued July 25, 2000; U.S. Patent No. 6,180,101 entitled "High Bandwidth Broadcast System Having Localized Multicast Access to Broadcast Content" issued August 8, 2000; and, U.S. Patent No. 6,128,374 entitled "Method and Apparatus for Transmitting Coded Audio Signals Through a Transmission Channel With Limited Bandwidth" issued October 3, 2000. StarGuide has other patents allowed and pending.

StarGuide Digital Networks recently agreed to merge with DG Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq:DGIT) in a tax-free stock-for-stock transaction. Further information about StarGuide can be found at www.starguidedigital.com.

StarGuide's wholly-owned subsidiary, CoolCast (www.coolcast.com), is an Internet broadcaster that delivers join-in-progress streaming media combined with regular Web content to PC users. The CoolCast service is currently available to thousands of broadband Internet users nationwide through partnerships with DSL service providers such as Broadwing Inc.'s (NYSE:BRW) ZoomTown.com and BRE Properties (NYSE:BRE), and is expanding this network through an agreement with Alcatel (NYSE:ALA). Additional partnerships and content relationships are pending.

Pathnet Reports Fourth Quarter Results.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ --

Pathnet, a privately-held next generation carrier's carrier of long-haul transport and competitive local access services to under-served markets, today announced its financial and operating results for the year ending December 31, 1999.

Fourth quarter revenue doubled to $1.0 million as compared to revenue of $0.5 million in the fourth quarter of 1998, and was up 67% sequentially from $0.6 million in the prior quarter. As expected, given the development stage of the company's operations, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) for the quarter resulted in a loss of $8.3 million, up from a loss of $4.5 for the year-ago quarter.

During the quarter, Pathnet announced landmark strategic investment agreements valued at $250 million with Colonial Pipeline, BNSF and CSX. As part of these agreements, Pathnet will receive the right to develop over 12,000 miles of the investors' right-of-way holdings. These investment agreements require the approval of the company's bondholders before execution, and the applicable consent solicitation process is currently underway.

"We're hoping to wrap the consent process up in the near term and we're certainly excited to begin working with our three new partners," said president and chief executive officer Richard Jalkut. "Our ability to pick and choose from their extensive rights-of-way clearly facilitates our strategy of reaching under-served markets through unique corridors while enhancing our 'smart build' approach."

Revenue for the year ended December 31, 1999 was $3.3 million, more than double 1998 revenue of $1.6 million. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) for the year was a loss of $25.1 million versus a loss of $15.6 million in the prior year.

During the fourth quarter, Pathnet increased its gross plant and equipment by $28.2 million, bringing total plant and equipment acquired to $138.8 million at year-end. For the full year, total plant and equipment increased by $90.2 million. The company also completed 4,800 route miles of network and 40 collocations, bringing its total network to 6,800 route miles with 40 collocations in 30 cities.

"Our wholesale customers gain competitive advantage and increased return on investment by subscribing to our innovative solution for their needs in second and third tier markets," said Chuck Liggett, Pathnet chief marketing officer. "We made tremendous progress last year in developing our unique VPOP Plus Service, which combines competitive local private line access with long haul transport. We continue to aggressively move ahead by developing two exciting new VPOP Plus options: xDSL and PRI local access. Led by Monster.com, TMP Worldwide's Interactive Operations Continue to Generate Profits.

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--August 3, 1999--

Reports record commissions & fees of $26.0 million;

Up 137% from the second quarter of the previous year and

Up 27% from the first quarter of 1999

Fifth Consecutive Quarter of Profitability

TMP Worldwide Inc., (NASDAQ: "TMPW"; ASX: "TMP") today announced that the company's Interactive Operations, led by Monster.com posted revenue of $26.0 million for the second quarter of 1999, an increase of 136.8% from $11.0 million for the prior year period. Operating profit for this quarter was a record $1.2 million, compared to $600,000 for the second quarter of 1998.

Anchored by Monster.com., TMP Worldwide has been successful in building the dominant global position in the online recruiting category. As competition in the online job search marketplace increases, Monster.com continues to lead by providing the largest community of targeted users with the best career management and employee recruitment services. TMP launched Monster.com's national advertising campaign during the Super Bowl this year and will continue its television, radio and print marketing campaign in order to promote its leadership position in online careers and increase brand awareness among consumers.

Andrew J. McKelvey, chairman and CEO of TMP Worldwide stated, "It was another strong quarter, with our Interactive Operations accomplishing what all Internet companies strive for -profitable growth. This outstanding achievement is attributed to our global infrastructure, which allows our various sales forces to introduce current and potential clients around the world to the power of online recruiting. We are fully committed to further increasing the size of our already substantial global "Intern-to CEO" network."

Monster.com was launched in mid-January of 1999 as a result of the merger of the number-one and number-four rated online recruitment sites, The Monster Board(R) and Online Career Center, respectively, both owned by TMP Worldwide.

"The Internet has become an absolute necessity for the recruiters and the job seekers," said Jeff Taylor, CEO of TMP Interactive. "It is imperative for us to continue to demonstrate to this audience our commitment to provide them with the best tool possible to achieve their goals. Thus far, we have clearly demonstrated this commitment, as Monster.com has become the site people think of when the words "job" or "career" come to mind," he continued.

According to independent research conducted by Media Metrix, 4.2% of the entire U.S. Internet population visited Monster.com during the month of June. This represents nearly twice as many unique visitors as its closest competitor. Monster.com is currently the 71st most often visited of all Internet sites and the 18th most popular in the Media Metrix category ranking of news, information and entertainment sites.

Monster.com has also received 122 million page views in June from 8.1 million unique visits per month, and currently, commands a visit time of approximately 15 minutes. The site offers more than 240,000 job opportunities and a resume database containing more than 1.6 million unique resumes.

On July 4, 1999, Monster.com launched its newest service, The Monster Talent Market, a marketplace within Monster.com where free agents, consultants and independent professionals can market their skills in real time to employers in an innovative auction- style environment, creating a new relationship between talent supply and demand on the Web.

"Our newest service, Monster Talent Market, is fundamentally changing the whole way people find employment," commented Mr. Taylor. "The continuing increase in traffic is a clear indication that the site offers the right tools, empowering job seekers and providing employers with faster access to talent."

"As our investors certainly recognize, we at TMP understand the power and dynamic nature of `.com'. We are continuing to grow in the number of job postings paid for by our clients and the number of visitors to our site, thereby positioning ourselves as the service provider with the best and broadest menu," added Mr. McKelvey.
