CLEVELAND -- If it weren't for the pasties and thong, the stateof Ohio might have been in the porn-promotion business.
Until Friday, that is. That's when the Ohio Lottery pulled itsads from an Internet photo gallery that showed a shapely blond womanundressing in stages -- fully clothed at first but with little leftto the imagination by the 114th frame. The color photos have adsfrom various sponsors underneath them as well as in some of thesequential frames, just like TV shows have commercials.
The message: Play the Ohio Lottery's Cash Explosion game. Now,back to the getting-naked lady.
Online photo galleries, whether displaying G-rated landscapes orR-rated cheesecake, are ubiquitous. The one on which the lotteryadvertised is connected with a network of Ohio radio stations, including Dayton stations WTUE, Mix 107.7 FM and 99.9 Lite FM.
The stations are owned by media giant Clear ChannelCommunications, which also own WMMS and WGAR in Greater Clevelandand WEBN in Cincinnati.
The Ohio Lottery says it wants to be associated with popularmusic, but not with garment shedding. When The Plain Dealer askedwhy it was advertising on this Internet photo gallery, lotterycommunications director Marie Kilbane said the site was picked byClear Channel as part of a broad media buy. The state agency said ithad not been aware of the racy photos until asked about them by ThePlain Dealer. It quickly ordered the ads be removed on Fridayafternoon.
