Vic: Govt to allow salvage of alpine ash stands
The Victorian government will allow the logging of alpine ash trees killed in lastsummer's devastating bushfires.
Environment Minister JOHN THWAITES has announced a program to salvage the timber, sayingit will rot and become worthless unless it's harvested within two years.
He says salvaging the timber could also provide jobs in fire-affected communities.
Mr THWAITES says 500,000 cubic metres of alpine ash saw logs will be harvested underthe two-year program.
He says strict environmental standards will be enforced, and no salvage will occurin National Parks or special protection zones.
But the Wilderness Society is critical of the program, saying there hasn't been a properanalysis of its environmental impact.
