Vic: First sod to be turned at West Gate memorial

The first sod will be turned today on a $1 million memorial to the 35 workers killed
during the construction of Melbourne's West Gate Bridge.

In October, 1970 35 workers were killed and 17 injured when a 2,000 tonne section of
the bridge collapsed into the Yarra river.

A royal commission later found the section had collapsed when bolts were removed to
allow buckled panels to be straightened.

It found the designers of the bridge failed to properly check erection proposals put
forward by contractors.

The government says the park will be a memorial and place of contemplation for all
Victorians affected by workplace accidents.
